The filament is fed directly from the extruder to the print head, where it is melted and deposited onto the print bed layer by layer.

<figure and high-end 3D printers.

Advantages of Direct Extrusion

This prevents disconnections or misalignments in the pneumatic connectors.

Ability to print on flexible and abrasive materials.

Easier filament changes

Disadvantages of direct extrusion

Increased weight in the print head, which may slow down the print speed

Higher cost (of 3D printers) compared to Bowden extruders.

What Is a Bowden Extruder?

The Bowden extruder is characterized by having the motor and extruder separated from the print head. The filament is fed from the extruder through a Teflon tube and deposited onto the print head.

Bowden-type extrusion system

This type of extruder is commonly used in low-cost desktop 3D printers and mid-range 3D printers.

Advantages of the Bowden extruder

The print head is lighter, which increases print speed.

Lower cost compared to direct extrusion 3D printers.

Disadvantages of the Bowden extruder

Limitations when printing on flexible and abrasive materials.

Difficulty changing the filament.

Possible problems when the Bowden cables come loose from the connectors.

Which system is best for your 3D printer?

If you're looking for greater printing precision and the ability to print on flexible and abrasive materials, Direct extrusion is the best option.

Direct extrusion comes standard on high-end and high-quality desktop 3D printers (although there are exceptions), whereas the Bowden extruder comes standard on mid-range and low-cost 3D printers.

Just because this extrusion system has some advantages doesn't mean that the quality of 3D prints will be poor with a Bowden system. Even so, the advantages of a direct extruder are considerable.

If you want to upgrade your printer from a Bowden system to a direct extrusion system, then you'll need to Find out which one is compatible with your 3D printer.

Normally, when you buy a direct-drive extruder for an Ender 3, it should come with a new spool with the motor already mounted, ready to be installed.

Convert Ender 3 to Direct Extrusion

If you can't or don't want to buy a direct-drive extrusion system for your Ender 3, you can try a design from Thingiverse that lets you make this modification using the same extruder motor.

Here you can see some of the best-selling direct extruders on Amazon. Always remember, before you buy, that You should check which one is right for your 3D printer.

Conclusions

The choice between direct extrusion and a Bowden extruder will depend on the type of 3D printer you have (or plan to buy), the types of projects you want to create, and your skills and experience as a user.

Both options have pros and cons, but if I had to recommend one I would choose direct extrusion, whether you're buying a new 3D printer or upgrading the one you already have.

If you already have some experience and want to upgrade your 3D printer, I recommend making that change, with the goal of experimenting with new types of filaments and reducing potential problems with a Bowden system (such as tubes coming loose from the pneumatic couplings).

If you don't have much experience yet, then I don't recommend replacing the extruder on your 3D printer. I'd tell you to wait until you've gained a little experience printing and learning about retraction.

Remember that if you switch your 3D printer to a direct extrusion system, you'll definitely need to experiment with retraction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is direct extrusion more precise than a Bowden extruder?

Yes, it is generally more precise than the Bowden extruder because of its configuration and design.

Can I print flexible materials with the Bowden extruder?

Yes, it is possible to print flexible materials with a Bowden extruder, but it is more difficult than with direct extrusion and requires some modifications to the extruder.

Which is easier to use, direct extrusion or a Bowden extruder?

The Bowden extruder is generally easier to use and maintain.

Thank you for visiting, I recommend checking out this post: No filament is coming out of the extruder An article you might find interesting.

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a 3D printer is the type of extruder it will use: direct or Bowden.
